From the Principal's Desk Dear Parents, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2006-2007 school year at Biscayne Gardens Elementary. As we embark upon a new school year we need each and everyone of you to become an active member of your child's educational team. By becoming an active parent serving on the PTA Board, joining a PTA Committee, or working with the Biscayne Gardens Educational Excellence School Advisory Council (EESAC), you will assist our teachers and administrators in creating a learning community committed to academic excellence. Parent involvement is a key ingredient in creating effective schools and we will continue to strive for excellence. Each parent must spend thirty minutes each night reading to his or her child. Thirty minutes of home reading is an integral part of the Miami-Dade County Reading Comprehension Plan. The more your child reads, the more you have to question and discuss with your child what they have read. This in turn, will help better prepare your child for the state assessment test. Each night your child will have Home Learning activities (homework), which will require your supervision. Providing a quiet space, being available to answer questions and making sure that all activities are completed is the key role you play as an active member of your child's educational team. In order to improve our students' test scores on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) you must attend workshops and parent meetings, which will be scheduled throughout the year. Remember, parents are the child's first teacher. Please remember to join our PTA and Educational Excellence School Advisory Council (EESAC). Our teachers and staff, will always, work as a team to make Biscayne Gardens Elementary School one of the best schools in Miami-Dade County. The parent booklet that was provided to you gives you valuable information regarding school policies and procedures. Keep it handy as a reference. Should you have further questions, do not hesitate to call us or stop by the office. Thank you for your assistance and support. I look forward to a successful and rewarding school year. Respectfully, Maria L. LaCavalla Principal
