Reading Strategies for Parents

 

  • Require a homework log or notebook to check daily assignments.

  • Obtain a library card from your local library.  Schedule guided visits to the library.

  • Have your children read to each other.

  • Use books on tape to talk about the plot of the story.

  • Volunteer to read to neighborhood kids or to students in your child's school.

  • Monitor student's nightly reading for 30 minutes. (Comprehensive Reading Plan)

  • Post test dates and times in an obvious area.

  • Frequently communicate with your child's teachers, principal, counselor and the PTSA.

  • Encourage your child to write a summary of articles, books or magazines.

  • Provide a variety of reading materials in your home, such as books and magazines.

  • Discuss the books or magazines that you read together.  For example discuss the favorite parts.

  • Have dictionaries and thesauri in your home.

  • Give books or subscriptions to magazines as gifts.

  • Have students read and follow recipes for dinner.

  • Exchange letters with your child regarding stories you have read together.
