Suggestion Rationale
Turn off the TV, VCR, and video games.
  • Children need specific times to read at home.
  • The CRP mandates that all students read daily for 30 minutes.

Spend time reading in your home.
  • Children will model your reading behaviors.  If you are reading, your children will know that it is a valuable way to spend time.
Listen to your children read and/or read to your children.
  • This can be quality time that you spend reading and discussing what you read.
  • Provide literary materials, a library card and visit the library.
Be aware of the test dates and times.
  • Provide motivation, encouragement and a good breakfast to start the day.
  • Praise efforts, academic achievement and good behavior.
Designate a space for reading and home learning in your home.
  • Provide a special location for the reading and homework that sets the tone for the importance of education.
Communicate with the school and the teachers on a regular basis.
  • Be aware of your child's progress and essential homework assignments.
  • Become active in the PTA/PTSA
  • Let the principal and teachers know that you are interested in the success of your child.
